The crackle of pigskin

9.17.12

I walk out of work and get into the car. I roll the windows down and put Radiohead’s OK Computer in the CD player. I turn the volume up.

I listen to perhaps the most perfect album of my generation. I sometimes forget how dazzling it is. I try to argue in my head that King of Limbs or In Rainbows or Hail To The Thief are my favourite Radiohead albums. Who am I kidding? Every note, moment and sound is necessary on Ok Computer. It is Graceland for the robotically hopeless.

I drive down the I-15 choking. The constant haze that is the Salt Lake Valley burns my eyes, ears, nose and throat. I pass a woman in a car. Her windows are rolled up and she lights a long cigarette. I wonder if the air in there is any better. The woman wears a visor.

I remember when I first saw Paranoid Android on MTV. I could not believe I was seeing the weirdest cartoon of all time (or so I felt) on television. There was even blurred out nudity. There is no way that Jesus or his bands (Switchfoot, MxPx, DC Talk, even Five Iron Frenzy) could compete.

I go to Stone Mountain, GA and see Radiohead perform live. I don’t understand what I’m seeing. My eyes, ears, nose and throat burn. I don’t know why.

Emphasis in original (journal entries)

11 April 2012

It’s time again for another entry from my past journals.

This gem comes to us eight years ago, in April of 2004. I lived in Athens, sold “ladies'” shoes and frequented a tea bar called Infusia (now, sadly, called The Buddha Bar).

I was also just getting out there and playing acoustic guitar and singing covers and my own songs. Apparently, I tried to combine my public music persona with my love for Infusia. Observe. [Note: The song titles you don’t recognize are probably my originals. It really just depends on how many song titles you recognize.]

26 April 2004

I talked to Katie about possibly playing at Infusia. That would be so cool, but I realize I would need some mellow stuff.

Headphones case

6 September 2011

Good after 10 PM (Eastern) loves and lovers and loyalists.

Music in headphones. Sometimes the only way to go. But not earbuds. (Like my canals need more pals.) Headphones. The kind that make you look like a real radio disc jockey.

Tonight’s obsession is The Hold Steady. I only own Separation Sunday and Heaven is Whenever, but the solid rock electric guitar is golden with the talk-sing vocals and lyrical storytelling.

When I feel the need to take the headphones experience up a notch I choose to put in post-Transmissions from The Satellite Heart Flaming Lips (especially The Embryonic).

With the need to send the songs directly to my brain, I ordered Scott Walker’s first four solo albums. My new music goal is to listen to his entire solo career in chronological order. I realize I need a method. So, I will listen to each album until is know every bit by heart. Until I hear the rhythms in my sleep. Only then will I move on.

Other albums worth listening to entirely via headphones:

  • The Antlers – Hospice
  • Any Arcade Fire album
  • Bjork – Homogenic
  • Any The Books album
  • Brian Eno – Another Green World
  • Cathy Foy – We Build it Tall
  • Centro-Matic – All The Falsest Hearts Can Try
  • DJ Shadow – Endtroducing…
  • Erykah Badu – Baduizm
  • The Flaming Lips – The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, At War with The Mystics, The Embryonic
  • Joanna Newsome – Have One on Me (be sure to listen to this album in one sitting)
  • Morrissey – Viva Hate
  • Neutral Milk Hotel – In The Aeroplane over The Sea
  • Paul Simon – Graceland
  • Radiohead – In Rainbows and The King of Limbs
  • Say Hi To Your Mom – Impeccable Blahs
  • The Smiths – Meat is Murder
  • Songs:Ohia – Didn’t It Rain
  • Suede – S/T
  • Weezer – Pinkerton
Yes, I know this list seems close to alphabetical. That is because I ran through my list to double check.
Clearly this list is missing many albums, but these are some of my favorites to beam into my face.
