What’s the show about?

What started as a simple punchline at a stand-up open mic transformed into a full show about getting out of a toxi relationship with Jesus Christ. Written and performed by Joseph Richards and directed by Joseph Megel, Breaking Up with Jesus debuted at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in 2021 and had its international premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe August 4-19, 2023, receiving rave reviews from critics and audience members. Grounded in small-town Georgia, U.S.A. and blending comedy and tragedy, the show tells the story of how religion affects family, struggles with gender and sexuality, and issues of depression and anxiety. Richards blends stand-up and dramatic storytelling on their journey back home to the Southern US to revisit their toxic ex. Along the way, audiences will meet a loving stepdad, a Baptist preacher and a pivotal nightgown. A one-person show dealing with family, gender, sexuality, religion, loss and forgiveness.
